In the early 80's I read a book while on a trip and wish I could remember the name. A man is abducted by aliens with hard exoskeletons. They have collected and hold many humanoids in a room and as their prisoners learn the alien language they are freed and operated on to look more like the aliens. The hero refuses to learn and eventually escapes by slowing his heart rate so much the holding cell floor thinks he is dead and drops him through. He goes through lots of adventures and at one point has a young alien as hostage and threatens to break its arm, hence the reference to "Crab Salad". In the course of things it turns out that humans and other humanoid races are descendants of a hyper-intelligent race wiped out by a wave of radiation. The Exoskeleton-ed aliens were originally pets. Any one else know this book? Have I hopelessly scrambled the plot over the years? It might even be a trilogy but I don't remember. Thanks
