The Unit by Terry DeHart

I recently finished The Unit by Terry DeHart and was curious what others have thought of the book?

I thought it was good but not outstanding. I had a few issues with the characters, but nothing that would really distract me from the enjoyment of the book overall.

Anyone else have the same or different reactions to the book?

It's one that reminded me of those Survivalist type books back in the grim ol' 1970's and 80's. You know: defend the home, the family at all costs. It's quite brutal, but in some ways less shocking than such novels used to be.

The twist towards the end was actually not that surprising to me.

It was OK: fairly well written, if a little cliched. I suspect many will read it, enjoy it and then move on (which sounds similar to what you've said, Durzo.)

I was a little surprised that the daughter died, I was glad she did as I found her annoying and a bit out of touch with reality. But the ending was okay, I would have liked to have no US military rescue. It was a typical American happy ending.

Yeah: really it should've had more of an impact, I thought. But it was odd that it didn't. In a book where you're living day by day, those sorts of things are flagged up as possibilities. In the end I thought: it happened, oh, but I wasn't too upset over it.

Now if I was a teenager reading this sort've thing for the first time, it might have affected me more.

And yes, the ending I also thought was a little too convenient.

But it's not bad: just nothing really new.

Just happened to pick this up at University Books in Seattle today. Im about 75 pages in. Its pretty cliched, especially with the daughter's and dad's passages, but I'm seeing some potential. I was also a bit put off that the author places everyone's secret thoughts on their sleeves; a rookie mistake, but forgivable.
