I just began this serie and i wonder what other people think about it. It is pretty much a mix between sci-fi and fantasy. Did you like the books?

Fortytwo could you tell me in what order you read the books.

Thom, you talking about the Pern series? If so read them in order of publication. Just follow the list that's just inside the cover. I pretty sure thats in order of publication.

Pern rules - and yes, order of publication is the way to go (it won't match chronoligical Pern order)

I really liked the early Pern books, but the most recent one? The Skies of Pern? Ugh. Hated it. The plot was pretty stale - basically a re-hash of the whole Canth thing - and the lead female character had a mullet! A MULLET!!!

Not to mention I find the re-characterization of the dragons really irritating. In the early books, the dragons are largely silent, only talking to the person they are impressed to (and the occasional person with the ability to talk to all dragons). But by the time you get to Skies, the dragons are yack-yack-yacking away with anyone who wanders by. And at one point during Skies, Ramoth and Lessa have this 3 page long in-depth conversation, which the original Ramoth would never have done. Irritated me to no end.

Sorry Thom, my reply to your post was my feeble attempt at a joke. :)

Has anyone read the Acorna series?

Didn't try any other books than Pern. I fear to be disapointed because i think it is very hard for her to match the quality of Pern.
That was the series that brought me into Fantasy, around 11 years ago.
The best books are the first two, Dragonflight and Dragonquest, follow shortly by Dragon Lady. I'm not sure if it's the right titles, i know them in french :p
I really like the Harper's books (Menolly and Piemur stories) as well.

Is The Pegasus series worth reading?

McCaffrey is great, especially the original pern books. In general, stories weakened over the years on newer books (though there are flashes of inspiriation in some of them). Newest works are sub-par in comparison (though still good reads).
It seems that Anne has passed the torch to her son, and the days of pern books are passed. Sad thing.
Her tower and the hive books started out quite well also, though they really dropped in quality about 3 books in (became something like romance novels).
