Robin Hobb / Megan Lindholm

vexed2002

Just a quick question as I'm supposed to be working http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Has anyone read any of Robin Hobbs stuff under her alias Megan Lindholm?..

Just finished all of Hobbs stuff and adored it, was wondering whether Lindholms was written in a significantly different manner or not.

Thanks!
PK

I only read one book, she wrote under her Lindholm name, and that was a colloberation with Steven Brust ("Gypsy"). It's urban fantasy, a mixture of a cop story with Hungarian fairy tales, and I liked it a lot. It's fairly different from her "Hobb books" but considering it's a colloberation and a different sub-genre to boot, I have no idea how representative it's for her other "Lindholm books".

I have a two book series by Lindholm, the series does not have a title, but the books are The Reindeer People and Wolf's Brother.

Whilst still fantasy, the books take place on earth in the distant past, the magic system used is Shamanistic. There is a slight difference in the writing style... but they are very good reads IMO.

They are generally available in the UK, but I think they are out of print in the US, as regards other countries... who knows?

actually though I am a big fan of Robin Hobb, I wasn't impressed with the books dennizm's read. Look at http://news.diversebooks.com/article.pl?sid=01/07/16/1922228&mode=thread&threshold=

for my thoughts (which I wrote a long time ago now!)

I've read one of her books under the name Megan Lindholm. It was called 'The Windsingers' and I found it quite different from say 'Farseer' series. It was a story with elves and some other similar creatures and set quite differently. Her style changed in comparison to that book; however, I believe it is worth reading too.

Hobbit... I do agree that the Lindholm books are not a good as the books published under the name of Hobb, but I still enjoyed them nevertheless... and your article was very well done. Anyone considering reading these books should be aware... they are not as good as her Hobb books, keep that in mind and you should be okay.

By coincidence I have just got the latest catalogue from the Fantasy & SF Book Club... I am assuming you will see it at some time... it has the first two books in Lindholm's Windsinger Quartet, published as one hardback... for a very good price. I am tempted... have you read these? I have taken note of Lani's comments above.

Lindholm's books still have the great character depth and reader enjoyment level as her work under the Hobb pseudonym. however, (in my experience - i have only read The Reindeer People) the events and scenes are not quite as breathtaking as, say, the Farseers.

Still, IMO, if you loved Hobb's stuff, you'll really like Lindholm as well.

I have read the first two Windsinger books called Harpy's Flight and The Windsingers. Harpy's Flight was quite a good read, and The Windsingers was a good read as well, although I felt the first book was stronger. The books have a striking amount of differences as well as similarities in writing style, I thought. Like most others have said, I also feel the Hobb books to be better, but I certainly enjoyed these two books and have the last two in that series as well.
