I know the book is not out yet but that it may be released soon.
Basically aliens arrive on the planet and humanity turns to vampires to help turn the tide of the war. For some reason I seem to recall the blurb stating that the Vampires are from Eastern Europe but that may or may not be apart of the book.
Also, for some reason I recall the cover of the novel as a towering ship/structure with a forest in the foreground. Again I could be wrong.
I know that it is a somewhat well known author but for the life of me I cannot recall the author's name.

I know it's not what you are looking for, but vampires in space figure prominently in Peter F Hamilton Night's Dawn.

I think that story you are mentioning is included in "Warriors" [Martin and Dozois] - it's not the one I posted about but I just read it - marines and romanians beat off an alien attack - the romanians turn out to be vampires. It's a fun story! Thanks for trying! The one I am searching for doesn't take place on Earth. And the aliens are more like a conquering demon horde.
Let's keep looking and thanks again!

It's not Hamilton as it was at the very least released this year and it is not a short story but a complete novel. Thanks though.

I found it David Weber's Out of the Dark (04 Oct 2010) -
Earth is conquered. The Shongairi have arrived in force, and humanity’s cities lie in radioactive ruins. In mere minutes, over half the human race has died.
Now Master Sergeant Stephen Buchevsky, who thought he was being rotated home from his latest tour in Afghanistan, finds himself instead prowling the back country of the Balkans, dodging alien patrols and trying to organize the scattered survivors without getting killed.
His chances look bleak. The aliens have definitely underestimated human tenacity–but no amount of heroism can endlessly hold off overwhelming force.
Then, emerging from the mountains and forests of Eastern Europe, new allies present themselves to the ragtag human resistance. Predators, creatures of the night, human in form but inhumanly strong. Long Enemies of humanity… until now. Because now is the time to defend Earth.
