I should probably fill this in then...

I'm 18, and studying engineering in the UK. I started off with Narnia at about 6, and reread this voraciously for two years. After reading my way through the mythology section of our library, I discovered, age 9, that people actually wrote more of this fantasy and sci-fi stuff, and have never looked back. I used to write a bit, but I've not done much of late. My to-read pile now warrants its own shelf, and is still growing...

I'm Sebastian and I am currently studying history in Heidelberg, Germany. I'm 22 and have been tied to the genre since some well-meaning friend of our family sent a roleplaying box for christmas 15 years ago.
(Damn even I feel old here http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif )
Tolkien followed promptly but LOTR before the hobbit.
I also know Hohlbein and I don't like him either mostly because all of his books are basically the same.

I'm a 15 years old guy from the south of Sweden (the land where polarbears walks the streets). The first book I read must've been the Narnia chronicles then The Hobbit (Tolkiens best). I've always loved fantasy but I've gotten into sci-fi just lately. I was watching Star Wars Episode 1 and thought: "Hey, that kid who played Anakin, I wonder if he got to do another movie after this one?".
And so I sat at my computer trying to find a little bit of info on what Jake Lloyd was up to. I found some rumors about that he was gonna be in a movie based on a famous sci-fi novel, Ender's Game. And so I thought, hmm... I wonder what that book is about? And searched the local library's database and found it (I even found it untranslated which made things even better). So I started reading it and I was done after two days. That was the greatest book I've ever read and it inspiered my sci-fi reading. I am now reading the sequels to Ender's Game but I'll probably be done with them soon.

By the way, who is the youngest member here?

Hey people, from just about everywhere!
Sorry about the Username - cheesy i know, but it a long story. I'm Holly, and im 17 from England. I'm madly studying for my AS levels now, and reading fantasy is the one way of keeping alive and sane.

I suppose my first fantasy stuff was, wait for it.......Narnia and The Hobbit - original huh?!

I'm really into fantasy art, and love doing my own stuff. This site is soooo cool - so many people with the same passions!
Love you all xxxxx

Hi, I'm 30 years old and live in Portland, Maine in the US. I'm into hunting, fishing, ham radio, kayaking, etc, etc.
Like many on the board I started reading fantasy with Narnia and the Hobbit. I've been a hopeless SciFi/Fantasy nut ever since-leaning more towards Fantasy. Lately, I've found myself reading more SciFi as I've pretty much depleted the supply of good fantasy stories.

Hi!
I read that this is the place for a newbie like me to introduce myself so here goes:
I live in Austria, female, in my mid-twenties and a huge fan of intelligent fantasy. Started out as a child by reading horror-stories, switched over to science fiction (Asimov) when I was about 12 and then discovered Eddings. I still read the Belgariad now and again, and although I know Eddings is not the greatest of authors I enjoy him immensely.
Anyway, I'm glad to be here and look forward to discussions about themes other than Jordan/Martin/Tolkien (that much I've gathered).

Hmm...I sneaked in with a few posts the other day without really introducing myself, being new to the board and all... http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well then, I'm a swedish guy 38 years old and counting backwards since I'm getting younger by reading this stuff http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I first got into scifi by the tender age of...10 or so while watching Star Trek and Space 1999 on the telly. Found a marvelous (at least I thought so back then) series of books called Starship ORION adapted from an old german tv show. I was hooked. Moved on to heavier reading like Asimov and...basically everything the local library had. In 1986 or 87 someone recommended Stephen Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant to me and my first steps into the realm of fantasy almost ended there and then. It was so depressing that I felt like killing myself! I HATED it intensely at first. Then, just to torment myself further, I got the second chronicles. It was even worse! For a split second I nearly dropped the whole fantasy thing but then I happened upon a novel that would change it all...

Pawn of Prophecy by our beloved David Eddings saved me! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
Then I discovered Feist, Roger Taylor and many other wonderful authors. My friends just shake their heads at me, muttering something about "...reading books in a foreign language" or "...books for children" or "how can you read books with more than a hundred pages...or without pictures in it?". *Sigh*...they don't know what they're missing.

Now finally a confession. Reading books in english is one thing. Trying to review them in an extensive way or discussing writing techniques or their deeper meanings is another. It's beyond me. English is not my native language so I'll keep my reviews or thoughts short. Rant mode off...

Hey Hawklan!
I loved the tv-series "Raumschiff Orion" and still do!!
Did you ever see it? It's cult in Germany for some people.
The music is great too!
