My name is Jonathan, and I'm an alcoholic. HA! (sorry), I'm 16, I live in Wynnum which is in Brisbane which is in Australia which is Southern Hemispere, I'm Year 11 student, a leaflet deliverer by profession, bassist in a punk band (Jaster Mereel, look out for them!), 58 is my lucky number, I use commas too much, and I'm a complete Sci-Fi fan. I used to only read Star Wars novels until I read some Asimov books and widened my taste. Eventually I found the Lord of the Rings lying around and read that, along with the Hobbit and the Silmarillion. I've incorporated Fantasy into my reading but I still read a lot of science fiction as well.

I don't really stick to one genre anymore though, now find myself reading anything I can get my hands on (I'm sure you've all been through that stage). Recently I just read Shogun by James Clavells and that book f**king rules. But that's another story.

I'm Paul, 21 yrs old (in 4 days that is) from the Philippines. I grew up in Japan and had primary school in a british institution though. My first fantasy novel was the Sword of Shannara, something I read when I was around 12 I think. I guess a big factor that got me hooked in fantasy was role-playing in AD&D. It was non-stop from there. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Impact24, where abouts in the Phillipines... Cebu by any chance? I have a very good friend from Cebu, and as I was watching Gloria Arroyo being sworn in, I felt very emotional b/c I knew some of the background.

Welcome to the forum.

What the hell am I talking about, you have been here a while, but welcome anyway http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi all, for some reason I feel compelled to comment also. I'm 20 from Seattle, WA. A student at the University of Washington enjoying the mental torment of earning a double degree in chemistry and chemical engineering. I only started reading fantasy a couple years ago, after I finally gave into my brothers' insistance. I have no idea what took me so long, to think of all that reading time I've missed out on! The first fantasy book I read was Talon Revenant by Michael Stackapole and loved it(I recently read hero reborn or something like that also by Stackapole and was infinitely disappointed...it was wretchedly cheesy). Favorite series started out as Jordan's WOT, but I believe that is slowly being replaced by Martin's a song of ice and fire. Also absolutely loved C.S. Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy and am ever so anxiously awaiting the next Dark Tower book!!

I have been posting for a little while now getting the feel for the Forum and it's regulars, a colorful and diverse lot to say the least. I just wnated to say that I appreciate all the helpful and timely responses to my posts. Lots of good ideas. I'm Kirk, and as obvious as it is, my name is a reference to my favorite philosopher. I currently( I say that because I don't know where I will end up next) live in Brooklyn, New York. I grew up on the Great Lake of Erie, in Euclid, Ohio though, home of the Polka Hall of Fame(no kidding). I am currently suffering the reality of existance as a social worker with psychiatric clients in a group home setting located in Manhattan(no shortage of customers, I assure you. In fact I have come to the conclusion that we are all that close to being on the list) I also am a humble picture maker, and have been since birth. I have exhibited and sold the occasional trinket, but no major breakthroughs yet. Why F/S? Us dreamers are naturally drawn to it as genre, No? I have always been interested in the fantastic. My first Fantasy books were Bill Peets childrens books, which are lovely(those drawings really stuck with me). I used to read the lives of the saints, thats about as fanaticly fantastic as it gets(raised catholic, still scarred) My Dad was an avid Fantasy reader so he had all the classics lying around, no need to name them, and I was curious...that leads to alot of time away from the genre and into philosophy, short stories, contemporary fiction and lots of cooky obscure books. Now I'm back and finding some comradery within the confines of this forum. There thats out of the way .

I've been lurking about this discussion forum for awhile, but I am just now getting around to posting all my vitals here.

My name is Molly, I'm 25 (in 2 weeks anyway) and I live in Texas. I saw that someone lives in Idaho, so for purposes of solidarity I'll mention that that's where I'm from. I'm one year into a Library Science Master's degree and I'm currently working at a public library. I just can't get away from books!

My first fantasy was the Dragonlance series that a friend introduced me to when I was 15. I married the guy 8 years later, so that should tell you how much I appreciated it! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif I do read other genres (mystery mostly) and though they are good, I can't seem to get emotionally into them like I can with fantasy.

My favorite authors are (in no order) Brooks, RR. Martin, Feist, Hobb, Goodkind, Tolkien and I'm sure there are others I'm leaving out. I'm almost finished with the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series by Tad Williams, and he is also going to be up there on my favorite author list.

I only have one fantasy author that I really don't like and that is Robert Jordan. I'm sure I've posted my reasons along with everyone else numerous times!! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think this is a really wonderful forum.. and it's so diverse! I love hearing the opinons from people all over the world.

Cygnus, I was wondering how far are you into the "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn Trilogy"?
I'm more than halfway through "To Green Angel Tower Part I".

Hello, Im new.
My name is Eirik, and Im from Ålesund in Norway, but now living in Bergen. Im 27, not married and unemployed, so I got a lot of time to read.

My first fantasy book was The Hobbit. My friend had bought a MSX computer and the Hobbit adventure game came with it. It also contained the book in paperback, so I read it. This led me to LOTR and silmarillion.
Cant remember what my first SF book was but I guess it was J.Bing and/or T.Å. Bringsvær.

Why Fantasy/scifi? Dont know, helps me forget my own boring life. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

hello everyone!
i have only recently found this site and it's great! I'm currently at University and the computers here don't allow chat rooms so this is a great way for me to talk to other people. I'm 22 and live in the UK (actually almost down the road from Wolfshead!). I really got into fantasy from reading books such as the Narnia Chronicles, the Hobbit and LotR, but I more or less read anything I could when I was younger. Amongst my favourites at the moment are Goodkind (from reading other posts on the site i'm the only one!), Terry Pratchett, Tad Williams, anything with wizards and magic basically, and I've just got into sci-fi, especially books that focus around our solar system.
Nice to hear from everyone, bye!
