I used to dog ear/fold pages all the time to mark my spot in a book, but as I got older and valued books more, I am completely against it. I always try to use a bookmark or remember the page number. My fiancee on the other hand DESTROYS books. If its paperback, when she is done with it, it mine as well go in the trash. She dog ears all the pages and bends the cover all the way back to read. Luckily I buy used hardbound now, so shes not so bad on them, but anyways, what do you guys do with the pages, and how well do you treat your books.

My library is much smaller than those of my nerd friends because I get my SF & F fix from public libraries most of the time. That's taught me to care for books.

I have about 2,000 books in my library and I would say 90% of them are in mint (like new) condition. The one problem I have about lending books to friends is the state they come back in so I very rarely do so. Bookmarks a must.

I used to dog ear pages, but for the past year or two I've been using nothing but bookmarks.

i treat my books very well, apart from occasional steaming in the bathtub
i no fold corners [i used to do that in my younger days] and don't write / underline inside. What i hated most as a teenager were the morons who ripped the juicier pages from library books.
sadly, however careful i am, some mass market paperbacks are just to poorly binded to resist re-reads [The Far Pavilions is one example]

Bookmark. I have a friend who doesn't mark the page at all, and just flips through to find her place later, and it annoys the hell out of me.

I lend my books out to people frequently. So most look like they've been to hell and back. I don't mind, though. I like a book that looks like it has seen a lot of hands.

Well read books are more comfortable to hold, in my opinion. So if I buy them used I tend not to care so much. I never dog ear though. I took about 30 of my business cards home one day and keep them in a stack becuase I'm forever losing bookmarks. When I was younger I just remembered the page, but now I will sometimes read three or four books at a time, so that doesn't work.

Pretty much exactly my situation, except substitute 'wife' for 'girlfriend'. I think we now have enough sample data, between the two of us, to conclude that men do, in fact, treat books better than women. ;)
