My free book?

Hello All!

I am pretty new here. Like...really new. Anyway I have finished writing a fiction book recently and it is pretty short (almost 30k words) so I know that it can't really be published with a normal publishing house. So I decided instead to just make a pdf of it and spread it around the web by myself. Now the question is, what are good places to do this? Can I do it here as well?

Any kind of help will be greatly appreciated :).

Thanks!

Getting a website might be a start, check out the Publishing thread (stickied here). Smashwords seems to be a popular spot. Good luck!

Oh really? Many independent presses publish novellas and anthologies. This would be just fine for those if written well.

I use Smashwords for the electronic versions of my books as well as Amazon. I seem to sell far more from the Amazon site than from Smashwords but SW offers a far larger distribution in many different formats. Their submittal requirements are fairly strict and you must ensure your manuscript is formatted in accordance with their standards.

For hard copies I use Createspace.com. It's simple and easy to use. Since I write my books using OpenOffice generating the required pdf is a snap.

There's no reason you can't offer it on Amazon for a couple bucks if you want.

If you prefer to actually make it free rather than charge a couple bucks, then I'd say set up a simple web-site with a link to the PDF.

And if you prefer to offer it in PDF (rather than Kindle on Amazon) but still get a few bucks for it, there are many e-book hosting sites that will let you offer it there in PDF format.

It's just a question of your goals. If you're intrested in getting it in as many hands as possible and don't care about money, I'd say set up a web-site and then just go around telling people how they can get it.

Here's some info on offering it on Amazon:

Thanks everyone for the help! I will definitely be looking into all of them.

I actually want to just spread it...don't really care about gaining any money from it. Maybe it could be a mistake, maybe I could make tons of money off of it...but I really don't mind. I just want people to read it :). Get my name out there basically...

Again, thank you all for the help and suggestions!

Cheers!
José
