Hi guys, this is my first post and I'm hoping some of you out there might have some advice for me.

I started reading Fantasy books about 20 years back and have read much of the more popular material, however I am by no means a massive reader. My favourites include Raymond R Feist & David Eddiings, recently I've just finished reading Trudi Canavan's latest book which I enjoyed a lot.

My question is that years ago I read the "War Of Powers" books and thought they were absolutely amazing. There was a blend of action with a sexual edge in places that I've simply never read in anything before or afterwards.

Could you tell me if there are other books out there that have that similar edge ? Or was these two books simply a fluke to come across ?

Thanks for any help. I am now stuck for something to read too so will look carefully into any suggestions.

I haven't read the War of Powers but I always recommend the Dresden Files for anybody hunting for good fantasy:

naturally, now I'm going to have to track down War of Powers

Welcome to the forum!

So, have I got this right - Action and sexuality? Well, there's always Terry Goodkin's books if you can handle his self-rightiousness.

Lately, I've heard people say Martin's ASoIaF have a lot of sexuality to them but I don't see that. It's more political intrigue.

Try Weeks' as well, Night Angel Trilogy. Not so much sexual detail, but a lot of mentions, dark, gritty stuff and fast-paced action.

If you get most fantasies that describe themselves as 'Chronicles,' or 'Sagas' and include some kind of war, they usually are basically a big action-sex scene sandwhich.

I could be more helpful if I had a clearer idea, I think. I've never read too many sexual passages in fantasies, or just not noticed them. There's always a little bit there.

I JUST finished the first Night Angel book. Loved it! Dresden is kind of like that but with a lighter tone, much more humor. Not a sex sandwich, I'm afraid, but definitely fun.

Yeah, I think the only sexual scenes in ASoIaF occur between a dwarf and his whore. Not exactly appetizing.

The fantasy series that contains the most sex, I think, would be Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's series (the 1st book is Kushiel's Dart).

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I don't want to get too hung up on the sexual thing, it's just that out of many, many Fantasy books that I've read none ever mixed it in there like The War Of Powers did and for some reason it just made the books even better. Not sure why, perhaps because it was so unexpected.

Anyway - keep the ideas coming and thanks for those so far.

Btw -- Just had a look at a Synopsis of Kushiel's Dart. Have to admit is sounds less Magic and Sorcery and nearer real events than I normally stray. I should really add here that I like my "fantasy" on the Magic side of the equation ;)

Joe Abercrombie's books tend to have some sexual scenes, rather gritty and visceral as a rule - and more importantly they are very good. There's The First Law trilogy and Best Served Cold.

Any particular series to recommend ?

JV Jones "Sword of Shadows" series has action, magic and sex, though if I remember correctly you have to wait for the third book before there's really much sex. Still, the series is better than most fantasy out there, and her magic ideas are cool and some of the settings are among the most original in fantasy. I'd recommend giving it a try, starting with "A Cavern of Black Ice."

Ah, not sure I can recommend any in particular, to be honest I'd prefer they were omitted myself, but they are there and realistic. Its been sometime since I read the trilogy, but Best Served Cold has two or three, which are, um, perhaps brutally honest and devoid of frills.
