Cannot remember the Author or the Title. (There was a sequel)

What I remember it it was a collection of Shorts regarding a Professor I believe who found a way to breach the walls of reality and enter parallel universes. (P not P etc.)

In the first book one of the stories he finds himself among the Norse gods and is with Heimdall (he even uses Heimdall's sword) fighting Giants.

There is a sequel book with more of the other world adventures. I seem to recall he had issues with the technology he'd take with him didn't always work either.

Written late 70's early 80's

I thought it was Alan Dean Foster but I'm sure I'm confusing it with the Spellsinger series which I was reading about the same time.

You may be thinking of the classic The Compleat Enchanter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Compleat_Enchanter) (Harold Shea) series of L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt.
