Are any of the Star Wars novels worth reading? I've read the Thrawn trilogy which I've heard some good words about but I did not think that much of it. Are there any better? I saw the latest book Rebel Dream that takes place much much later in the bookstore. I'll need to kill some time soon, is it worth buying?

Don't get Truce at Bakura, blech!!! What an awful book, bad writing and I didn't even care about the characters I've loved for 20 years in that book! OK so maybe if you want to get it then I can't stop you LOL. As for Star Wars books that are good, Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter was really good, and the Bounty Hunter trilogy was too. That's about all I've read from Star Wars so far http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

'Rebel Dream' is part of the New Jedi Order series. I haven't read any of these books and I don't know the correct order of publication. The impression I get is that you may not be able to just 'dip' into this series and understand what is going on. Best to check out the internet for more info: either at Amazon or the publisher's sites.

Well, the trilogy by Timothy Zahn's pretty nice

Truthfully, the reason I got into science fiction was through the Star Wars novels. Some are very good and some are awful.

The X-wing sub-series is very easy to get into, and both Aaron Allston and Mike Stackpole are both very interesting writers.

Raisuli is correct in saying that you can't just 'dip' into The New Jedi Order series. Each book takes place nearlly immediatlly after each other, so it is important to read them in the proper sequence.

The following is the chronological order of the books that are currently on the shelves in The New Jedi Order Series.

Vector Prime
Dark Tide 1: Onslaught
Dark Tide 2: Ruin
Agents of chaos 1: Hero's Trial
Agents of Chaos 2: Jedi Eclipse
Balance Point
Edge of Victory 1: Conquest
Edge of Victory 2: Rebirth
Star by Star
Dark Journey
Enemy Lines 1: Rebel Dream

The vast majority of these books are rather well written. As I said before it is pretty important to read them in the proper order, and only Vector Prime and Dark Journey are sub-par. All in all the series is pretty good.

As for the rest of the Star Wars books, well the only things that are sure bets are the Zahn and Stackpole books.

Just wanted to second scifi_fantasy_fanatic's opinion of the New Jedi Order series.. I've loved Starwars since I was 4 but found the vast majority of Starwars books just covered the same old ground..

The new Jedi Order books have kept my curiousity piqued and finally feature more Jedi related stuff. Although I have to admit that I think the newer books are just covering the same old ground again.

As a sidenote, if you are a Starwars fan u may want to take a look at the comics if thats your kind of thing.. I really enjoyed them, but I'm not particularly fussy ;)

I tried the comics, but at 15 bucks a pop they were starting to drain my banking account at an alarming rate. While the length of books compensates for this; the comic books short length just doesn't tickle my penguin like the novels do. (especially NJO)

Agree about Zahn's series, it is pretty good.

I'm actually starting up the NJO series myself, aside from Stover being in the series, J. Gregory Keyes another fine writer has contributed. I think that's the key, Lucasfilms/Lucasbooks and Del Rey are recruiting, for the most part, established and respected authors in the genre to be a part of the series.

From what response I've seen about the series Star By Star by Troy Denning is the best in the series, and a Very Good Book, period.

Guess so. I think it MWS said some really good things about Star by Star. I thought Mastage did, too.
