Hi everyone, long time viewer, first time poster!
Just wondering if anyone has read Peter Hamilton's Fallen Dragon. I've already read the Nights Dawn trilogy and really enjoyed it, so I was really looking forward to this new book.
I'm now halfway through it, and frankly, I have slightly ambivalent feelings about it. I enjoy his descriptive writing and his knowledge of science and technology, though I'm getting somewhat restless with the single character point of view (especially when you compare the multiple POVs in the previous trilogy). I'm sure I will finish it, though I'm getting anxious to start, dare I say it, Memories of Ice. Any thoughts?

Hello lionheart!
Fallen Dragon is...erm, Ok, IMO.
If you like Hamilton's style you'll like this one, but it is simpler than the Night's Dawn series. Like you, I looked forward to reading this one and at the end..erm, felt it was OK. Don't regret reading it but I can see the criticism about it.
Hopefully this isn't a spoiler but I couldn't help thinking of the TV series 'The Clangers' when I'd finished.
I did feel that Hamilton was treading familiar ground here - though amazed at how fast he could turn around another big fat novel after the Night's Dawn series.
To be honest, Alastair Reynolds's latests (Chasm City and I've heard Redemption Ark, though I've not read it yet!) and Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon are better.

I've recently picked up Fallen Dragon at the library and was wondering if it was worth my time. Hamilton's Night's Dawn stuff was OK, but it had a hard time keeping my interest.
Most of the reviews on this book that I've seen elsewhere echo what Hobbit says. Has anybody else read Fallen Dragon since Hobbit's post in July?

I finished it a couple of weeks ago. Really enjoyed it once I got into the rhythm of it. The flashbacks initially had me quite confused but by the end I could understand their relevance.
Personally, I'm glad that Fallen Dragon is different to the Nights Dawn trilogy...I appreciate an author who can alter his style.
I'm really hanging for my copy of Misspent Youth to arrive. It seems like another, even more significant, departure for Mr Hamilton.

I finished this book about a month ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It held my interest all the way, and I was sorry to get to the end.
I had some reservations about the flashbacks at times, but I'm not a fan of those anyway. It didn't spoil my enjoyment in this book at all.
I wish a lot more books gave me as much pleasure.

Hmm, I had some initial problem getting use to his flashbacky style of writing BUT, it was this style that made this story so successful.
And if anyone is having trouble holding on to the story, trust me, persist. The middle chapters are what I would call ultra dilated BUT everything ties up in the most AMAZING way in the end!! I would say that last 20 pages was completely worth the wait through the ENTIRE book!!

Well, I read the Night's Dawn Triology, then A Second Chance At Eden and now I tried The Fallen Dragon. I injoyed this book very much and I especially like the more complex style of writing (flashbacks, multiple time lines) implemented in this story. But in the end I was not satisfied by the finish. Peter showed the same hastiness as in the last book of Night's Dawn. Some points were left open (SSSSSPPPPPOOOOIIIILLLLLEEEERRR: why did the mature dragon at Aldebaran shot his egg at the aproaching ZB starship?).
I regard this book as one of the best I read this year, but I wonder what it would have been if the author had taken another 100 pages to create a more detailed and not so apparent end.

Book was good, I did enjoy it all the way trough there was only one small dissapontment - about in the middel of the book I figured out who the mystrious friend was that gave him the superprogram(a bit cryptical but I don't want any spoilers) Despite of knowing the end (and I didn't peek) I was captivated by Hamiltons superb storytelling and the surprise was still there when storylines started to wrap up. I think that in the future I will read everything that Hamilton publishes...
oh, I'm doeing it allready:confused:
