I just remmembered a Book I read ten to fifthteen years ago it wes set in present day london. The main characters were elven / PeterPan like creatures that evolve from street kids if they run away before they turn ten. They grow long pointy ears and stop ageing they are in constant war with the police (who wan't to catch them and clip there ears which turns them back into normal children) and among themselves as they have formed tribes to gaurd there own territories.
The story I read was about a group of hero's from all tribes that set of to steel the treasure of the Wombles.
It was rather grim story but then I was a kid when I read it I thought I might give it another go but unfortantly it is nolonger on my shelves Does it ring any bells for anyone I cannot remmember the title or the Author.

Any help would be great..:D

Wasn't the wombles a separate series of books? I remember reading about the wombles, a race of furry, aardvark-looking animals living invisibly under a public park (or is that a garden) in London.

Are you sure it was Wombles??

The Wombles of Wimbledon Common was a childrens TV series about a group of creatures who used to collect all the rubbish left by humans and put it to use... recycle it in other word.

Yes it was wombles the Author got round the copyright on the childrens books and TV show by making the Wombles have a realy bad lisp. The Hero's often comented on the stupid creatures being unable to pronouce there own name. Half the story is about the adventures they have on the way from inner city London to Wimbledon. The Wombles unable to get W sounds out refer to themselves as Rumbles and the Elven/Peter Pan talk about the enemy and those stupid giant rats and so forth the name Womble is never mentioned but it is clear what the Author is on about.

Sounds like the Borribles books by Michael de Larrabeiti. They are

The Borribles
The Borrible go for Broke
The Borribles: accross the Dark Metropolis

Check them out here - http://jaeger_ayers.tripod.com/Borribles/borribles_main.htm

and he's a page about the Rumbles connection to the Wombles -

I actually know a joke about two guys, a girl, an apple and a 'frigging candle', but I won't go into that.
