read & lost great SF novel - pilot of orbiting craft is trying to communicate with creature on surface of hostile planet to help retrieve essential object from crashed probe.

impossible to enter atmosphere, no common understanding for communication between them.

thanks for any kind of help.

Could it be Hal Clement's Mission of Gravity?

Similar plot except that we could communicate using specially designed radios, and we could land on the surface and either stay in fluid tanks or ride in pressurized exoskeletons because of the extreme gravity.

The aliens looked like a cross between a caterpillar and a scorpion, about the size of your thumb.

Sounds like Mission of Gravity to me too.

Here's WikiP's page on it:

thanks to "Livens" & "Junk Monkey".........but NO, i've got that one, what i'm looking for was of a similar plot line; the surface & atmospheric conditions were the problem & the need to discover how to communicate, not the gravity.

anyone else got any ideas please.
