Well, L.E. Modessit will be translated after few months. As far as I know from he's quite good author, equal to Farland. I need some clearing info about the magic system, the world, the fantasy creatures and etc. I'll be very grateful...:)

Hmm... the question is alittle vague, but lets see if I can at least give some of the basics.

The central idea of the magic system in the Reculse books is that people are either inclined towards Order or Chaos. Depending on the current balance between Order and Chaos in the world, wizards have different levels of power. Order Wizards are pretty much limited to using their powers in ways which support and enhance Order and likewise Chaos Wizards have to promote Chaos.

However balance is very important. If Order gets too powerful, then the world will adjust things in one fashion or another, usually leading to a hugely powerful Chaos wizard.

The world of Recluse is essentially all humans, there aren't any fantasy races or monsters. But there are various societies many of which are well developed.

The early books show things from the point of view of the Order Wizards, but later books take a look at things from the other perspective.

Hope thats some help.

I would like to add in case you weren't aware of it that the books as published do not all follow each other through time.
Hope that makes sense!

The world, uhm better explained with a pic I guess...

http://www.webpan.com/msauers/modesitt/images/map-recluce.gif

The small island is Recluce (a recluse is a deadly spider :)), the big one is Candar which is divided in several kingdoms...

Recluce is a hotspot of Order (cause of all the order wizards there) and so whole of Candar is the place for chaos...

Also a special thing about the book (not sure how much you know about the book) that order (in most eyes good magic, although not always :)) is black and chaos is white...

Cool Map!

You might win the SFFWorld Post of the Year! :D

Have you got the map of Ursula LeGuin's Eathsea?

If so, can you post it on the Forum?

Elan... the books are very VERY good. They are different from your usual 'classic fantasy'. But it is a hard series to descibe for many reasons...

The first is the chronolgy of the books... in books 3 to 5 you actually go back in time to events before the first 2 book (I think)... then in book 6 you return to where book 2 left off... and THEN go back in time even further than book 3.... all a bit confusing... but you could read them in chronological order.. rather than publication date.

Another hard thing to describe is the relationship between the Black (Order) and White (Chaos) schools of magic. Neither one can survive without the other... but they are constantly trying kick each others butts... and it is the struggle to find the 'balance' that our heroes from either order have to deal with.

They are considered to be fantasy... but they do have technology... and this is all part of the magic... magic needs that technology... and vice versa.

The writing is good... except for his constant use of sound effects... and I mean CONSTANT!!! "creaaaaak..." the door opened... and "Heeeeehaaaaaw" went that bloody anoying bloody donkey. :D

I do recommend them...

I wont tell u much about this (spoiler warning in sight :)) but yes there are wizards who have a balance of chaos and order in their magic.

Anyone else here hate how he spells out *sounds*?

I feel like I'm reading a comic half the time.

His Recluse books are pretty decent, but there are really only a couple I thought were very good.

However, they are a *hell* of a lot better than his newer "Songs" series.

Anyone know if he is going back to Recluse? It is unlike him not to have pushed out another Recluse book in so 'long'.
