Suddenly driving me crazy! Can anyone identify a (probably) golden-age short story where the inventor of time travel arrives in the future, is misidentified as insane, lobotomized and ends up living out a fantasy life in "virtual reality" as a wild west hero?

It drove ME crazy too. Finally found it, I think

"Spectator Sport" by John D. MacDonald, published in 1950, Thrilling Wonder Stories, anthologized by Groff Conklin in 1956, "A Science Fiction Omnibus".

I read it in the 1963 Berkely Medallion anthology of the same name (much shorter).
