So what do you use?

I'm a bit of a word hound. For my wedding present I didn't get the standard, tacky, tried and true, bread and butter watch, or elctro-gadget from my spouse. NO, I got The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. Ahhh... She knows me so well. I also got The Oxford Dictionary of New Words, where you can get updated on all the new words Listserve, RU-486, and Essex Man.... (She got a watch)

I honestly get a comfortable feeling knowing my dictionary is in the room when I sleep at night.... Probably because I read for about 1.5 - 2 hours prior to going to sleep, and often want to look up words.

ANYWAYS, enough about me.

What do you use? Especialy online? I often refer to www.dictionary.com while sitting at the computer. Are there any good/great PC dictionaries? Or other online dictionaries that are worth their spit? I sometimes use Google to research a word...

Thanks
-Silas

errmmm......

why don't you read a dictionary before sleeping? So you can read and look up the words at the same time!!!!!!

I have found the free version of Word Web (http://wordweb.info/free/) to be a great and easy pc dictionary. Try it!

If I don't know what a word means........I ask one of my parents (so sue me!). If s/he doesn't know, I ask the other (I'm still serious). If they're not around, I ignore the horrible word and keep reading anyway :). Actually, once you've seen word in context several times, I reckon you get a pretty fair idea what it means.

Or are you guys looking in dictionaries for some other reason that I'm failing to grasp.

I use a thesaurus when I'm writing - but there hasn't been much of that lately :(.

Edit: just realised that i employed my ignoring technique just moments ago, when i read the title of this thread! :)

When writing I generally use a fantastic little book called The Crossword Puzzle Dictionary. It is a very useful thing that provides similies for everything. Say you need another word for ravenous. All you do is flip to the appropriate page and find about a dozen alternatives.(My favorite is voracious.)

BAH! All gophers are born knowing everything there is to know! We have no need of lesser creatures dictionaries! That and access to Encarta. . .

I had been using www.dictionary.com, but it always took FOREVER to load, so I switched over to Merriam Webster online: www.m-w.com . It also has a handy audio clip, if you can't figure out how to pronounce the words (of course, it is in an American accent, so it might not be especially helpful for those of you in other parts of the world!).

Also, if you are ever especially bored check out www.refdesk.com If you ever wanted to know anything, there is probably a link to it from this website! Crossword dictionaries, atomic clocks, pun-of-the day sites and so on.

I wander the Refdesk every three or four days... Great place.

That talking dictionary is fun! I like looking up swear words while at work!! It always gets someone's attention...
