Have-a-go Heroes

Most fantasy novels I have read obviously have bad-guy characters that are integral to the plot. However, the author is almost always firmly placed on the shoulder of one of the good guys. I.E. most books focus on the thoughts, successes and loves of a Hero and how they defeat the baddies!!!

Can anyone think of a book where the main character was most definitely eeeeeevil and even better, can anyone think of a book where the bad guy actually wins?

Thanks

I can think of some books were the main characters weren't 'good guys' but they weren't pure evil either.

Can't think of a book where the bad guys win.

Well, if were getting out of fantasy, try 'A Clockwork Orange'

Elric of Melnibone. He had bad guy qualities. He didn't win in the end, but then again neither did the good guys. Heh.

Stephen R. Donaldson's Gap serious had a couple of very foul :) dudes. However one Angus Thermopyle is, as an individual, is quite bad and what Donaldson does with him, makes for a very interesting read. Be warned, though, this tale isn't for the faint of heart. I think it is another one of Donaldson's pieces of genius.
