Hi im looking for space opera books with romance in them. I dont mean like a Romance novel set in space and i dont mean novels that dont have sex scenes or only mention them in passing....im looking for something in between. Something that details the sex scenes but is also a good read as a space opera.

Thanks.

My favorite is the Miles Vorkossigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. I don't remember any graphic steaming scenes a la Peter F Hamilton, more like suggestive innuendo and humorous banter, but they are not prudish books and the space opera part is really great. Later books in the series focus more on romance - with courtships and weddings, but they don't ignore the science part.
I've not read yet the latest: Cryoburn, so thanks for reminding me to put it forward on my TBR pile.

Personally I like Julie Czerneda. Her first novel A Thousand Words for Stranger is a good place to start. If you like this one you'll want to try her other stuff.

Sandra McDonald's The Outback Stars, first of a trilogy.

Ann Aguirre : Jirantha Sax novels, first one is Grimspace

A personal old-time favorite of mine are Doris Egan's Ivory novels. The 3 novels were collected in an omnibus edition back in 2001.

The most famous romantic SF writer of the moment is certainly Catherine Asaro. She's very popular and although she's not really my cup of tea you should certainly try her. Start with Primary Inversion.

Marion Bradley Zimmer : many of her Darkover novels have strong romance elements. Her duology Spell Sword and Forbidden Tower is a nice romantic story. This was published in an omnibus edition by DAW called Forbidden Circle.

Kate Elliott's Jaran novels. Very good stuff !!

Tanith Lee : Silver Metal Lover (something of a classic) and Biting the Sun

Sharon Shinn : Wrapt in Crystal, Heart of Gold, Jenna Starborn (SF retelling of Jane Eyre), her Samaria novels

It should be said that most old school space opera writers like Harry Harrison, Jack Vance, Murray Leinster, L. Sprague de Camp, Philip Jose Farmer and many others also often usen romantic subplots in their stories. However this is mostly in the planetary romance tradition. You know the formula : brawny hero must fight villains and gets the girl/princess/queen. Not sure if this kind of pulp fiction is really what modern romance readers are looking for.

OK, here we go for another small list :

Anne McCaffrey : she wrote tons of books and almost all of them have strong romance elements

Ann Maxwell : Dancer Trilogy, written in the early 80's. Out of print but worth looking for

Linnea Sinclair : Finders Keepers, Games of Command .....

Sharon Lee : the novels set in her Liaden universe are romantic space opera.
Start with Agent of Chance

Joan Vinge : former wife of Vernor Vinge. Try the Snow Queen. Based on the fairy tale by Andersen.

Lisanne Norman : Sholan alliance. Romance between a human woman a male cat-alien (!!). Sounds like good fun. Start with Turning Point.

Melissa Scott : Silence Leigh trilogy. First book Five-Twelfths of Heaven. Out of print but not too difficult to find.

Kathy Tyers : Firebird novels. Once again, out of print but try abebooks.

S.L. Viehl : Stardoc novels. First novel Stardoc.

Debray Doyle/James MacDonals : Mageworlds series. First novel Price of the Stars

Jo Clayton : very popular in the 1980's. Wrote a lot of space opera, mostly with strong romance element. Out of print but her books are easy too find and certainly recommended !!

There's LOTS of sex in Peter Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy.
