By no means I am trying to advertise here, but I thought it is something that would be interesting to many people and it seems like a very good cause.
I have never heard about it before until today, but I think it's already a project of some scale at least in US and Canada.
So check it out on http://www.bookcrossing.com/home and tell me what you are thinking about it.

Sammie, let me know which park bench you're going to leave a book, 'cos you can't live all that far from me :D

Hmm I've done this, sort of, before. Though I didn't sign up for anything.
When I travel, I leave paperbacks I just finished in the airplane pouch or the motel room.
Left a few books in Germany, and two in Jamaica that way. Beats shlepping them back hom again.

Airplanes and Hotels are probably not the best places... Think about it, when was the last time you signed into a hotel and found a book in there? Okay, bad example(D**N Giddeons)
When was the last time you got on a plane and found a book in the pocket? Shouldn't happen. They have cleaning crews, the cleaning crew doesn't care about your generosity, they throw it away...
Yes it beats dragging it along for the rest of the trip, but it doesn't have the desired effect...
On the other hand it's a neat idea... I used to do a similar thing when I was in school. We would have books that the class would all read, so to keep track of which copy was whose we would all sign the inside front cover(I'm sure most of you have done this) As the book would be re-assigned to another person the next year it would get another signature... Some books would have 6-7 signatures in it, sometimes there'd be drawings in there, or buggers... All the things you expect to find in a elementary schooler's books... In 7th grade I got a copy of a book, I went to sign the inside cover, and there second in the list was my 10 yr older brothers name! No shnikees, it was realy his book! I never returned that one, yes I stole it, it's in a box somewhere.
