Inspired by juzzza and Belgarion’s talk of mushrooms and drinking over here (http://www.sffworld.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2966), I thought this might make for an interesting thread:

Off the top of my head, I can think of quite a few instances of drug use in Robin Hobb’s books. These include:

elfbark tea (FitzChivalry)
carris seed (Chade)
cindin (Brashen)
mirthleaf/Smoke (King Shrewd)

Can you think of others from different books?

Disclaimer: this thread should in no way be thought of as endorsement of drug use. So kids, don’t do drugs! :)

The stuff Biagio used in Tyrants and Kings, for the life of me, I can't remember what it was called, only that it caused the users to have blue eyes.

The myriad of drugs (medicinal) and enhancements that Elric uses to keep his frail body alive.

in Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun, Severian uses the corpse-eaters drug made from the alzabo. He is also fed mushrooms before he is captured in one of the towns he visits.

Well in LOTR and the Hobbit there was Pipeweed. In Fortress Draconis there was a plant that elves used to get high off of a long time ago. Unfortunatly, the name eludes me.

The all-powerful spice of Dune. (I know, SF, but we're talking drugs, right?)
That drug that Felisin was into in the Malazan books.

...

Can't remember any others at the moment. :)

I vaguely remember the Sea Folk in WOT sniffing a powder.

Well, there's the 'milk of the poppy' (a reference to opium?) found in AsoIaF. And there's also some terribly addictive drug that plays a part in Rawn's Dragon Prince, but I fail to remember its name.

That's strange... nobody seems to remember the names of the drugs that's brought up. :p

Every baddie in Robin Hobb uses Mirthweed.
