But, wait, they don't know they're on a game show? Why not? Wouldn't they have a clue with the video diary? How would they know what the red means on their Omni?

No, they don't know anything. It's sort of like the movie "The Truman Show" - because the humans marooned on the planet don't know they're being watched, it's assumed that they won't adopt a false persona and thus just be their real selves. And the people running the show will do everything they can to maintain the illusion because everyone watching will know these people are really living it.

The video diary is a standard feature of the Omni - sort of like the notebook program on a computer. There's nothing to suggest it can be shared, so while someone might suspect, unless there was some kind of response, they couldn't prove it.

As far as knowing what it means when the omni band turns red, then starts beeping at you, well, trial and error. And there was a little mixup in the auction lots. Someone who's worn an omni all their life will be joining the other shipwreaked humans - and like them, have no clue what is actually going on.

Given that this situation is more or less a trope in SF literature and films, wouldn't it be fair to have the castaways guess that either they were being watched, or being hunted, after about a day?

Without the Omni the assumptions might just be - kidnapped by aliens, blimey aliens really do exist, alien ship has an accident and crashes, serves them right, wait a minute....there aren't any large compartments full of eggs in here are there?

With the Omni and it's features to help them survive the whole marooned thing becomes a little suspicious. Especially if there is some subtle pressure to make entertaining video logs. At this point they start looking for a mini-gun and wondering where Arnie is.

Moved the posts here so the thread has some flow and Expendable can address further questions here.

Ah, excellent idea, Kater.

Okay, I didn't get that. I didn't know the Omni was something everyone wore all the time, anyway. But I'm with Chuff. They would know, wouldn't they? Wouldn't they suspect? It's not like this hasn't happened before on TV like a bagillion times. Right? Or is this the first season?

I just want to make sure I get this right. Another question: so I can't "do" anything with another character? Can I respond to another (writer's) character?

I have an idea forming...

Thank you Kater.

Everyone got their omni in processing, before they were even put up for auction. It contains a tracker - they are property now, after all. The ship they're on did crash, it could have been an accident. Yes, the characters are free to speculate that they're being watched. But they won't know that for sure. There will be no cameras to find. At least none they can recognise.

It is the first season of this show.

The characters don't have to make video entries; posters are encouraged to do so.

You can interact with other player's characters, but you can't say, "I stab John to death", you can only say, "I stab at John" and it's John's decision to block the stab or get stabbed and how badly he's hurt.
