Hi:
I was just curious. How do non-Fantasy/Sci-Fi readers react to your love of the genres? Do you feel defensive about it? Or do peopel not care? Do the 'literature' readers look down on your chosen hobby? Personally i dont care what people think, but I do think that Fantasy/Sci-Fi dont get the respect they deserve.

You only have to read the majority of the top ten seller chart to see that they don't deserve to be uttered in the same breath as many fantasy / SF authors.

How do they react? They just think "oh yes, another of Sammie's little quirks", and then get on with whatever they were doing.
:)
seriously.

Read above post but substitute Shef or Sheffield (my real first name) in place of Sammie. Now add in snobby girl voice: Yeah he is so wierd I mean he also likes to write, and oh my god! Think. Yeah I be a w**re when I grow up because I have no brain and I think I am better than everybody. But at least I was cool in high school.
That is the way of life however. *sigh*
Shef, unusally depressed and cynical at the moment. :(

My friends... Well, mostly think I am one odd boy for reading fantasy... But they are bending to my will, slowly, but they are bending. Eventually, I may have bent one enough to try a fantasy novel... Maybe. But I'm forcing my girlfriend to read fantasy and scifi. I've already had her read Dune. I don't know what I'll make her read next. I was thinking maybe Dave Duncan, that fits her personality.

As an English major at OSU I can definitely vouch for the snobbery of the "literature" crowd. There is no disputing the fact that D. H. Lawrence is 10 times the writer than Terry Goodkind. Fantasy generally falls short because it's written for solely for entertainment--it lacks sophistication. Literature tends to operate on several levels. It's not surprising then that those who read Joyce and Hardy will look down upon those who read Jordan and Martin. Oh well, I'm hooked so screw em.

Get them to read some of the best in this genre that we love, then make informed comments...
