Novel - think the main character's name was Connie.
She was holed up in a mental institution and somehow visited by a person from the future, or perhaps the person was able to inhabit her body ... not sure?

I'm certain only Connie knew about this visitor, no-one else was able to communicate with him/her.

Just remembered - the person was a "she", but I remember Connie thought she was a "he" at first because her figure was quite "boyish".

At the end of the book you are left wondering ... was it all real, or was she really just nutty?

Any ideas? Many thanks ...

More details: I just remembered the visitor's name (I think) was Lucien.

I read it in the 1980s.
