Is the Darkover series by Marion Zimmer Bradley Science Fiction or Fantasy? Maybe it is Science Fantasy? I haven't tried this series yet and would like to know what to expect.

Here are a couple of sites to check out.

Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover (http://www.multimania.com/varzil/darkover/site/darkover/short-stories/marion.uk.html)

Thank you for the links. It seems to me that the Darkover series is Science Fantasy. A series that incorporates elements like space travel and magical powers. It sounds like a fun series.

Do you call a book that combines Science fiction and fantasy- fantasy fiction or science fantasy?

Does it matter what genre it is? If it sounds interesting, read it! If you like it, call it good!

Are you aware that you've just replied to a thread that's from over five years ago? None of these people are around any more.....

They may not be around but I am. Just getting into the genre and appreciate the information.

Thank You !

In answer to the original question, I would put these on the Sci-Fi side. While there is a strong fantasy element, and some books could be considered nothing but, most have at least some presence of visitors from another planet, space travel, and/or other advanced tech compared to the natives.
Unless you want to go off into the "mixed" genre names previously cited.

Have you read many of the Darkover books?
What else have you been reading?

No, I've never read any of the Darkover series. I guess in the science fiction/fantasy area what I've read and love is JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series (which I actually read BEFORE the movies), Anne Rice - I read INterview with a Vampire ages ago and liked it, but haven't been really wild about the following books, I'm crazy about anything by Stephen king and have just bought one of the Dark Dark Tower I, Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon, some Piers Anthony, and I have the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy set by Douglas Adams, although I haven't read them yet. That being said, do you have any suggestions? :)

Welcome Debra. Darkover is very similar in tone to the Anne McCaffrey books, (Pern and otherwise!) so try those. I would also recommend Joan Vinge's The Snow Queen and the sequels if you like it.

For other recommendations, go to this link: HERE (http://www.sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8580) where there are lots of recommendations and links to other similar threads!
