I'm trying to find the name or author of a novel I read in the '90s about a guy investigation a mysterious illness in the near future. The illness is caused by the nearing completion of a unification theory. One of the characters in the novel is a wealthy guy that has completely changed his genetic structure so as to allow him to survive in a future wasteland by eating old tires and by being immune to every virus and bacteria on the planet. Does anyone have any idea what novel this is? I think it came from the SF book club or something. Please help. It's making me nuts.:confused::mad::(:eek::rolleyes::confused:

I think this might be Distress by Greg Egan. Been a while since I read it, but the journalist / unification theory / mystery disease fits. I can vaguely remember someone eating tyres, but I'm far too lazy to reread the book and see if an incidental character did that.
