Part of chapter one is now available from Sword Of Shadows - Chapter One (http://www.orbitbooks.co.uk/orbit/orbit_feature_fc_fortress_of_grey_ice.asp?PGE=&ORD=orbit&TAG=&CID=)

Don't know how to link it properly but click on 'feature bits' on the left of the screen and it's down near the bottom under 'first chapters'. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I just fixed the link to go directly to the chapter... ### DennizM ###

What is the general idea (no spoilers, plz) of that series by J.V. Jones?
I've been meaning to read it.
I would also like to know your opinion about it, and why. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Book 1 is called a Cavern of Black Ice and tells the story of Raif Blackhail, a young tribesman and Ash, a foundling. Out hunting with his brother one day, Raif returns to camp to a horrifying discovery. He suspects that another tribesman was involved and so his story begins. Ash was found as baby and adopted by Penthero Iss, a powerful man who treats her well, but she begins to suspect that he has his own agenda.

This is just the bare bones of the story as I don't want to give anything away - there are a lot of other great characters, (notably Raif's young sister) who feature prominently in the tale. Well written, exciting and at times touching, this is one of my favourite books. I would recommend reading JV Jones 'Book of Words' trilogy first though - it's not essential but it adds a good twist!

Thanks for fixing the link Dennizm! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ah it been three years since I read book one. I can't really remember much.

If you want to try out J V Jones without committing yourself to a series try "The Barbed Coil". It's pretty good stand alone novel.

I've enjoyed all of her books but i've noticed some people here don't like her first series but love the second one. I don't see much difference between the two myself.

Shadowen, are you telling us that this series takes place in the same world as her Book of Words? I didn't know that...

It does. It's to the North.
