Filters for bad words

I have been making the rounds and reading the May FF stories and noticing **** popping up in the text, mine included. Last year we had a pretty good discussion about the F word, and I concede to its exclusion here but are we not able to engage in some minor swearing in the stories sub-section. I thought that there was some openess to it.

I agree we do not need to use that kind of language in our general posts but in the stories section I feel there should be some tolerance. For goody goodness sakes we are talking about the shi* word here.

It is over the top and I find it a little frustrating.

I agree, but this board runs on VBulletin - I'm 99% sure the profanity filter is pretty much an on-or-off switch on this thing.

Maybe you are right, but something tells me in the past that I have used some profanity in stories that was fine, while other words were not ie the f-word. But memory can be a fickle thing.

I just really want to be able to use the occasional word, besides **** looks ridiculous!

Concur!
Limiting the available language is more destructive than helpful.
Suggest a cautionary addendum to story titles, e.g., PG18, indicating the language included is suitable for mature people.

You may have noticed I use English colloquialisms in mine - "arse", "sodding" and "bugger" appear to be words unknown to the Holy Guardians of the Naughty Word :)

Kidding aside, I think the point of it is that VBulletin doesn't let you apply rules on a per-board basis either, so (I think) if you allow people to use certain words in the story sub-forum, you have to allow them to use them all over the whole site. The site (again, I think - mods feel free to slap me if I'm wrong here) aims to be roughly PG13 rated, so that doesn't work. Asking people not to swear is also not going to work...

Hi all.

Apologies for this.

As you've said, unfortunately it is either 'On' or 'Off', though I'm having a look around...

And the PG 13 rating limits us a little. Recent events, where members couldn't control themselves, has led to this action. I do appreciate that the majority of our members, and in particular our older members, were able to control their extravagances but sadly it doesn't seem to work for some members.

There are ways round it though. I'm sure f*** works, as does s**t or s***, if you have to.

I do accept that it can be frustrating, though, and that we are having to treat members as something they are not.

Calling a knowledgeable Mod - help us out please.

If it is an either or thing, then I guess thats that. But, again, I am pretty sure I have sworn in stories and even the occasional post before this.

I think most members here are pretty responsible to know when/how to use language appropriately. Those who are not are likely of the sort that get asked to leave anyway.

Sorry - did not see that Hobbit had joined us.

I'll live with it, but don't like it. Especially if there is the bad apples in the bunch thing going on here.

Totally understand, Daddy D. If I said that many of the staff shared your frustration, would that help?

We have tried to keep the list to a minimum.

Appreciate the sufferance, but as I said and some have said above, with a little thought, it can be worked around.

Is it possible to get a list of these George Carlinesque banned words, PMed if neccesary. When I write I do not think about language, if a word is right it is right. I like PeteMCs workarounds and they do lend themselves to fantasy and have used myself. They don't work for me with more modern pieces with real type people.

I shall have no love for the *.

Peace.
