I'm looking to find an oldie - its space opera circa AE Van Vogt and it features
an entrprenurial merchant prince battling his competitors.
I rember in one storyline he has to ask a powerful lizardlike alien (the Skaal or Kraal?) to destroy his enemies from its orbiting space castle which it does with a deadly green ray weapon.
If I can't find it I'm going to have to write it myself!
