Hi, I read a series of books in the 80's, foolishly loaned them out and they were never returned. I don't know the title of the series or the author. it was a fantastic story, but can only remember parts of the plot.
A family goes on vacation, but the father has to join them at a later date. He's then told that his wife and children were slaughtered in their mountainside cabin.
I think the father may have been a government agent of some kind, and sets out to avenge the deaths of his family. however he then discovers that the souls of his family are trapped because of the violent nature of their deaths and only he can free them. to do this, he has to travel into spiritual realms and learn how to battle the forces that hold the souls of his family captive. That's all I can remember, help please
