You can disable the smilies, avatars etc etc in your User CP (control panel) under the Edit Options area.
It is a little disturbing looks at the sheer number of posts in the GD area...or off topic posts in the discussion forums... doh!

Er...what exactly is causing the problem? I'm not aware personally that the pages are loading slowly. The pop-ups aid the site with income to offset the costs of running what is an entirely voluntary site, but these are limited of course so as not to be a nuisance. The forum features of polls and smilies etc. are there to enhance the forum experience and again, I'm not aware that these are causing slow downs or any other loading problems. And the image and smilies features can be disabled, as already mentioned.
Is any one else experiencing these problems or have the same issues?
Thanks for your feedback, JohnH. :)

Oh, so even with the features disabled you still get slow loading? I guess that could suggest a problem at your end. What browser do you use and how fast is your connection? I really can't think of much else, unless your ISP has usage congestion?
