Hi,
I haven’t read much fantasy but I have fallen in love with the Lord of the Rings. I am looking for suggestions of books to read. I am interested in elves, fairies and wizards but not really in kings, knights and dragons. Any suggestion that you might have would be great. Thank you.

If you're looking for a good Fairy-esque book then may I suggest C.J.Cherryh's 'The Dreaming Tree'. It's a book based around the political upheaval of a region (I forget the name) and spans a great deal of time in the one tome. The timespan isn't irritating however and the book is superbly written. Central to the story is Ealdwood where the last of the true Elves lives. She is a central character and, I thought, quite different to the general representation of Elves in fantasy though she does carry some inevitable cliched elements.

But I'm rambling. Essentially it's a well written book with a cast of humans and faeries and an enthralling story.

I also have to add that though you have no interest in certain areas of fantasy, it would probably help if you gave some suggested books a try even if they contain such elements as there are books that cannot be missed, no matter the content. :)

Try Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Fiest. It's a good, light read.

Good lord MR! Are you sure? That's a bit heavy (adult) for some readers. Is that a good recommendation?

My 2 cents would be: Patricia McKillip's 'The Book of Atrix Wolfe' (which some people found boring though it was okay for me), Terry Brook's Shannara series and Dennis McKiernan's Mithgar books (Tolkien-lite galore), and...

Hmmm, where's FF with his links to books to read when you need him?

I would recomend Katharine Kerrs' Deverry series starting with Daggerspell

There are kings and Dragons later in the series but by that time you'll probably be hooked and wont care

This series has the most likeable elven people that I have read ! :)

The Belgarion series by David Eddings one of the first and best fantasy series I ever read after the Lord of the Rings.

I highly recommend it.

Faerie Tale by Feist is not a light read! It's a great book though.

Better explain myself. I guess Faerie tale gets a bit dark. And by light I mean short and not as descriptive as WOT for example.

For what it's worth, my vote is for Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestries - a 3 book series that I enjoyed immensely. I will confess now that there is a king and even a dragon - but I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.
