What books should I read on holiday?

Hi everyone!

I'm going away on holiday at the end of next week, to Portugal, for two weeks, and I've got a big pile of unread books sitting about. These are books I've bought over the past few months and haven't got round to reading yet.

I can't decide what books to bring with me, so I thought I'd post the list here and perhaps if anyone else has read any of them, they could give me their views on whether to bring them or not. I'll probably bring four or five. Not all of them are fantasy - there's quite an eclectic selection. :)

Here's the list:

"How To Be Good" by Nick Hornby
"Walk This Way - The Autobiography of Aerosmith" by Aerosmith with Stephen Davis
"Glue" by Irvine Welsh
"American Tabloid" by James Ellroy
"Blood Hunt" by Ian Rankin
"Hitler’s Lair/The Screaming Eagles" by Leo Kessler (2 books in 1)
"Zero Option/Stand By, Stand By" Chris Ryan (2 books in 1)
"The White Order" by L.E. Modesitt Jr
"Wizard’s First Rule" by Terry Goodkind
"Perdido Street Station" by China Mieville
"David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens
"Sea of Silver Light" by Tad Williams
"House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski
"The Man Who Japed/Dr Futurity/Vulcan's Hammer" by Philip K.Dick
"Islands In The Sky/Earthlight/The Sands Of Mars" by Arthur C.Clarke
"War And Peace" by Leo Tolstoy
"Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry

I eagerly await any advice you guys may have.

Cheers!

Cheers Nevyn, but I'm looking for something to read when I'm lying on the beach or sitting by the pool with a nice cold beer in my hot little hand! :)

American Tabloid for sure, I'm a big Ellroy fan and this is one of his best. And, for my money, you can never go wrong with PKD.
Enjoy, your holiday!:D

If you haven't read 'E' by Matt Beaumont, it is the perfect holiday read. It's a book written entirely in email comunication and is set in a west end ad agency. It's absolutely brilliant - exceptionally funny and because it all comes in bite size email chunks, it doesn't demand too much concentration...

Can't say too much about your list except the Hornby which I found OK but not his best. War & Peace? Surely a little heavy for sun drenched reading...

Anyway, whatever you choose, have a great holiday.

"The White Order" by L.E. Modesitt Jr. He has a very different writing style and its often hard to choose between the black order magicians and white choas wizards, which are the good guys and which are the bad as a hole that is. Three stars out of Five

"Blood Hunt" by Ian Rankin The hero spends all his time internally moralizing his every thought and action I found this barely readable. One and a Half stars out of Five.

"Wizard’s First Rule" by Terry Goodkind Good stuff staight out Epic fantasy with just enough new elements to keep things intresting. Four out of Five stars.

"Perdido Street Station" by China Mieville Very good different hard to descibe and you have to be in the right mood maybe not the best holiday fare. Four out of Five stars

If you're up to Sea of Silver Light I recommend you take it with you, and it has the additional bonus of being a big fat book, reducing the need to take others.
While Perdido Street Station isn't quite as good IMO, it is an OK read and also contributes with fatness factor.

I read Perdido while lying on the beach in Greece, so I think it's perfectly appropriate holiday fare.
