I'm trying to find a series of books I read when I was younger. In the beginning of the book, the girl is on a spaceship, going from Mars to Earth to go to college. During their voyage, they're hailed by an unknown vessel and check it out.
The main character is a female, and I recall her name being Marie, though this may not be the case.
In the first book, humans make first contact with an alien race. The aliens have a large space station which looks somewhat like an abacus, and something about the inside architecture kind of strains humans eyes.
The girl in the book befriends a young member of the ape like species and they begin teaching one another the others language.
Later in the series, they run across an alien species that comes to be known as 'Doctor Blanket', who is a telepathic mushroom like creature.

Help?
