I remember reading a book or series of books where the main character’s aim was to die gloriously in battle and secure his place in Valhalla and would love to know the title(s).
The memories I have are very vague but I think the story started with a group/tribe that spent all their time training in warfare and their sole aim was to die gloriously in battle. Their village was attacked and a young warrior was the sole survivor (thrown into a river maybe).
There was maybe an old man that also survived and brings up the other survivor in the traditions of his people.
I think either in the same book or another in the series the main character raised an army made up of people that were barred from Valhalla. I think this was because they hadn’t died in glorious battle but had lost a limb and survived and where thus barred as they weren’t whole.
Even reading this back the details seem vague but any help would be appreciated.
