Driving me nuts!

Years ago, I borrowed a series of books from a friends father. I am pretty sure they were in the Space Opera vein. All I can remember is it beginning I think on the bridge of a ship basically introducing all the characters.

I remember having discussions with my parests and friends about these novels and I am pretty sure those centered around how the plot of the books drew their inspiration from the plight of the Jew's during the Holocaust.

From what I remember of the covers, the featured a ship, perhaps a planet and had a shiny maroon or reddish color to them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I read the books sometime around 1995-1997 but I am pretty sure they came out anytime between the late seventies to late eighties.

Thanks.

Nope, that isn't it. But it is now on my reading list! Looks like a good read. The book series I am talking about was much less hard SF and much more space opera. Good find though thank you.

I was afraid no one would remember what this one was. Been trying to find it for years? Any idea where else I could ask?

Could it be one of these (http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1126) six covers, each of the same book?

Arg. I thought you had it there, the name looked so freaking familiar, but alas no what I am looking for is at least a trilogy. Thanks for trying! I really wish I could remember more about the story. Looks like this will be one of those lost stories.
