Due Date

His name is unknown and quite frankly it doesn't matter to me in the least. I have been watching him for three months now. From a distance he looks like an average schmuck. Leaves for work at 7:15am sharp every morning. On his way he stops at the local coffee shop and tips the cashier sporting a big friendly smile and back in his car to make it to work at exactly 7:45am. At 12:15pm he walks down to the deli and orders the same turkey and cheese sandwich every day and then heads right back to the office. At Precisely 4:15pm he leaves work and drives right home and turns his lights out for the night at 10pm.

She says he molests little girls. No one can prove it but those people don't deserve to live with the rest of us. Normally I would finish the job in a week tops. There's something different this time around though. After all this time I have not witnessed any strange behavior at all. It makes it much more difficult when you believe the target is a genuinely decent guy. As I stare through my scope I keep telling myself this is a bad man and the world will be better off without him over and over.

Today is my due date. The cross hair of my rifle is locked on to his forehead through his balcony window. His face is so close that every time he puts a chip in his mouth I expect to hear the crunch. At any moment it could be his last. My finger is itching to pull the trigger. My finger has been twitching on the trigger for the last 20 minutes. "Just pull it" I have repeatedly been telling myself. "This is just another job. Do your job Ray!"

The time is 11:59pm. I glance down at the second hand and it ticks away past the 30 second mark. I can't do it. I can't kill this man. His is innocent. I can feel it. "Come on Ray, earn your keep. God dammit why are you being such a pussy?!" I take a deep breath as my pager beeps. It's her. She knows I failed. Do I feel bad? Maybe a little. That money would have been good but I am not a cold blooded killer. As I begin lowering my gun I see a body enter his apartment. It is female! I quickly lift my gun back up. I would kill a child molester for nothing and that is exactly what I am about to do. My heart is racing now. The excitement is back. I feel the power rush. I scan the room to make sure it is a child. Damn all I see is a shadow in the curtain. Dammit! I need to see her. I need to know for sure. The female body moves out of sight. I scan the other room windows and as expected the master bedroom light turns on. The curtains are closed so I follow the shadow with my scope up close on the shadow. The figure is at the window producing a large shadow. The curtains wiggle as the figure moves her way in between the window pane and the curtains. It is very dark. However, I can make out a dress. Slowly I look up her body and see a womanly figure. My scope reaches her face only to see complete darkness. Come on let me see that face, I say to myself anticipating the chance to eliminate the trash of society. The female figure is just standing there. "What are you doing"? I mumble to myself slightly frustrated with my scope where her face should be. Flick! She turns on a table lamp in the window and it is a female. My entire body tightens up with confusion as I see a familiar face with a barrel pointed right back at me. She blows me a kiss and waves as my car window shatters and my body drops limp.
