Children of the Sky by Vernor Vinge

Vinge is, arguably, one of the more prominent and acclaimed SF writers practicing in the genre today. He's won multiple awards (3 Hugos for outstanding novel) and his best known work is perhaps A Fire Upon the Deep. Well, as some of you may know, a proper sequel* to that work, The Children of the Sky (http://www.tor.com/stories/2011/06/children-of-the-sky-excerpt) (links to excerpt (http://www.tor.com/stories/2011/06/children-of-the-sky-excerpt)) is hitting shelves in about a week.

It has been about a decade, but I remember enjoying A Fire Upon the Deep but not really connecting with the *novel set 20K years prior A Deepness in the Sky and published a few years later.

Do any of you fine SFFWorlders plan on reading The Children of the Sky (http://www.tor.com/stories/2011/06/children-of-the-sky-excerpt)? The publisher, Tor, sent me a review copy that, mentally, keeps climbing up my to read list.

Plus, ain't that a purty cover?

Some other threads about his earlier work can be found here but I wanted to try to keep this thread specifically to The Children of the Sky:

I'm definitely planning on reading it if I can get my hands on a copy. I remember loving the hive mind concept of the Tines and can't wait to see how Vinge handles the return to that world.

I usually wait for paperback prices, but it will go on my watch list. Still havent read the one about the spiders, but Tines are one of the most creative alien races ever.

just looking at the cover makes my hands itch to pick it up and dig in.

I like the cover too but even 10-15 years ago Vernor Vinge's prose struck me as awful and I do not expect to have improved so while I will open the novel whenever I get my hands on a copy, I expect i will put it down as unreadable soon after; though you never know, I may be surprised...

And having the Usenet as the model for the future of communications looks now so silly to make Fire Upon Deep so dated...

his style is pretty plain i found, maybe even bland by some peoples standards.

i like that style and those characters so this is great news for me!

So is there any explanation of the setting and what the story is about.

OK, now I get it.

Finally read the line at the bottom of the cover. I don't think I'll be getting it.

Cant wait!

I am curious to see if those are suppose to be original Tines on the cover. To me they look like ordinary wolves with jackets... nothing like what they were describes as in AFUTD.
