Has anybody read this book?.Found this book on Amazon and it looks good.I haven't read any Science Fiction before though and I was wondering if a fantasy fan would enjoy it as well.Too much technology would put me off reading it, but if it was good enough I might still give it ago.Would appreciate help :)

Yes I read this about a year ago.I don't remember it as being too technological, in fact I reckon a fantasy reader would probably get more out of it than I did.
I think it's her most famous novel and she might have won a Hugo (or something!)for it.I thought it was ok but not exceptional.

Kingslayer - one of my favourites!

Mentioned in the Space opera thread of a while ago.

Is SF, but loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen story. Complex, lengthy (and some would say boring!) space opera, but I really enjoyed it and its sequels World End and The Summer Queen. (There is a new one, Tangled Up In Blue but I haven't read it yet.) If you've read any other Joan Vinge (or CJ Cherryh) you'll have an idea of what to expect.

I really enjoyed the Snow Queen when I first read it many years ago. Vinge does a good job at blending SF and Fantasy elements in this books. It's definitely a SF book, but there is just enough fantasy type stuff to make it interesting for someone who prefers Fantasy to SF. It's not very technical at all, and the science takes a back seat to the characters and story development. I say give it a try and see if you like it. :)

Thanks everyone, I'll give it a go.

I liked The Snow Queen , but I loved the sequels! The main problem I had with it is a big spoiler though, so I won't get into it except to say that I thought The Summer Queen set things to rights. Tangled up in Blue is actually a prequel to The Snow Queen featuring some familiar characters and some new ones.

The Snow Queen is one of the finest novels of the early '80's. It's a great book and so are most of Vinge's other novels I've read.
