Help find an unkown author/series

Hey, I am hoping that maybe someone here will know this..... I had read a book or two from a series back in high-school and want to see if I can get back into it, but I'll be damned if I can recall the author or series name. What I can tell you is that it was a medieval setting and the "knights" had some sort of power armor powered by magic. The key bit that I seem to recall was that the knight could control an energy blade of some sort by adjusting his index and middle fingers; together produced a short and intense blade, spread apart a long and less powerful one.

I have tried google searches etc, and of course searching for "power armor fantasy sword" returns too many results to sort through effectively.

The books might be total crap if I read them now, but I seem to recall enjoying them back then. Any ideas?

Maybe the Northworld (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northworld) series by David Drake?

The people, though they live in primitive conditions with little technology, have very sophisticated powered armor. This Armor has one basic attack where from the suits hands power shoots out of. The power can range from a length of feet to inches depending on how powerful the suit is and what the wearer wants. The shorter the power then the more damage it will do or block. The other weapons is shoot this will shoot a burst that will cause huge damage to the enemy but will drain your suit of all power that it has.
