editor looking for submissions 'for love' anthologies only

Hi, Dorothy Davies here, new to this site, came here courtesy of a contributor to one of my anthologies who said, why not visit SFFworld.com and put out an appeal for submissions? So I am and I have already realised this is a great place and wonder how I have missed it all this time. (because I don't surf very much??)

Right, I am the editor of quite a few anthologies for Static Movement. I began with 1, ended up with 16, quite a few... all needing dark dark stories. 4 are in print already and I am delighted to be able to say one of them, Comes The Night, has been chosen to be included in Ellen Datlow's Best Horror 4, the best accolade any editor could have. One of my other thrills was seeing one of my books on a London bus, by the driver's seat... a contributor saw it and photographed it! Proof that the books are bought by others!

I am also editing an anthology for Red Skies Publishing, Tales Of The Sword, which needs a few stories to fill it up.

Even though these are 'for love' anthologies, it is worth getting in there, the exposure is tremendous. My author central profile is looking really good these days as I contribute to most of the other Static Movement anthologies as well as edit for them. You can do the same if you get into any of them! Amazon are more forgiving these days and usually have the notification up in a few hours.

Financially, it can be seen to be mean not to send out contributor copies but you get 20+ stories in a volume and you are talking money! Static Movement is small, independent and a viable working publisher which, with help and support, could get bigger and begin to pay for contributions. Red Skies Publishing, same thing.

And there is a spin-off, of course. All the stories I have had published have been collected in an anthology which is currently with my editor/publisher with a view to going out on kindle any time soon. (I am already there with my historical books, I am a full time editor/writer/medium, which means writing and editing are my life - I bring this into my work with non paying anthologies too. No skimping.)

I will add the links here, and ask anyone interested in sending in a story, reprint, old, whatever, that is good enough to see print, to get in touch. It could be the start of something wonderful, who knows?

that second one will take you to the page where you will find all my anthologies listed under my name. Take a look!!

Oh, before I close this thread, apologies, I tend to 'talk' too much ... my fingers get carried away...

Hey Dorothy,

Thanks for the post. I'll try to drum something up for some of your other anthologies, but they'll probably not come forth till after NaNoWriMo (December).

Good luck!

thanks!
Good luck with NANO, I'm supporting someone through that, as in 'there if he needs instant feedback' but I think he'll do fine and with your commitment, you will too!:D

Thanks for stopping by, Dorothy! You mentioned you want "dark" stories--anything more specific than that? I found a list of anthologies on the Static Movement page but can't find a similar list for Red Skies. Like tmso, I'm working on NaNoWriMo this month, but I'd love to have a theme or two in the back of my head...

thanks for the response. Been trying to get back to the forum all weekend but a) down with a filthy rotten cold and b) putting the final touches to my Grim Fairy Tales anthology before sending it away. Then I had to go to bed...

Dark = horror or anything with a dark overtone. I like horror, I write it as well as read it. So, send what you have when you can.

And every good wish for NANO! If you make it, it's a good foundation for future work, something to revise, edit and work on afterwards, like, Christmas...:D
but it is good practice, writing something every day if you can or making sure you catch up at the weekend if you don't. I've been busy ... had a story accepted and two featured on blogs and sites. Good weekend all round.

Red Skies Press (not publishing, stupid female that I am) is new, let me go get their link ...

If everything slows down this week, I might get to explore the forum and leave some comments. This seems like the site I have been searching for since forever.

Dorothy,

Welcome. *When you find the time, you really must check out the sub forum, here, Stories.

There are some folks posting marvelous fiction there which is really worth reading.

Mickie

P.S. I remember seeing that you are looking for sword themed stories from a while back. *Maybe I'll come up with something next month...(this month is brimming over with other writing stuff). *

As far as "dark" fantasy...well, whether I will it or not, most of my fiction just comes out that way. *'Will have to see if I can manage something interesting enough for you to take a look.

thanks for that, yes, I will. Tonight I am going off line early, to try and get over this pesky rotten cold. Two reasons, one is I have to work and the other is, I have to do an evening of tarot readings this Friday, my yearly stint at a Ladies Night and I can't miss that! It's a joy to do. Meantime, there is work to get through ... I have just closed and submitted an anthology called Grim Fairy Tales, done and dusted, superb stuff in there. I will be looking for work from SFF people as they get to know me. I'm pretty much WYSIWYG, scatty medium who is also a writer and editor, shut up on this picturesque but tiny island where 'somewhen' is a fact of daily life. As is 'anywhen' something which makes 'manana' look like speed of light.
