A book I read as a teenager between 1995 and 2000...
I vaguely remember a mage living in a tower, and a girl who becomes his while she heals from some injury.
There are fireworks, which I think he makes out of gunpowder.
Not a lot to go on, but I'm newly obsessed with figuring out what it was.
