I know this may be difficult request, but hoping maybe someone will read this and my vague recollection will be enough to ring a bell about the book I cannot quite recall. I read the book back in the 1980's and it was a fantasy novel, below is the description I can remember:

The basic plot at the start of the book is that the king only had a daughter and wanted a male successor. He had his wife killed, perhaps secretly, but before she died she cursed him to be unable to have more children. This was done to protect her daughter's right to the throne. He tried many remedies to remedy the curse, both mundane and mystical in the book with a new queen. The daughter was also a witch of sorts. I know there were 4 archangels involved and each was associated with a direction, like north, east, south and west possibly.

I have tried, with little success, to remember more and find this book. I believe the author was a woman and I know it was writen in the late 1970's through as late as the mid 1980's but no later then like 1986 as my brother had got in through the fantasy/scifi book club which he left before 1986. I know this is not much to go on, but I hope someone can help me
