Does anyone Know this Series?

I am looking for a science fiction I read years ago. All I can remember is that it was about a rece of beings that put their brians in robot bodies that had eyes all around and one eye in the top. They spent their time exploring and the series opens when they find a body orbiting the earth and put the brian in one of the robot bodies so that he can tell them the history of the earth. The series is then about this human's travels with this race.

Can anyone help?
