Been trying to decide what section to post this in... hope this is OK! Well, I'm a huge fan of these forums, so it is with great pleasure that I am able to post this up here and hopefully a few of you fantasy writers would like to be involved
The Fantasy Writing Contest Opens 1st February 2012
The Fantasy Writing Contest is a writing contest open to anyone who can write English Prose. We are looking for Fantasy short stories of up to 8,000 words and they can be within any sub-genre. Should your entry be chosen, not only will you win a fantastic prize (cash and trophies are amongst those on offer), but you will also feature within 'The Fantasy-Faction Anthology' alongside authors such as Myke Cole, Mark Lawrence, Jon Sprunk and many more besides!
You can find out more about it at: www.fantasywritingcontest.com
Thanks in advance and any questions... shoot me a message!

In the middle of the writing advice page, you have the word limit as 10k, but everywhere else it's 8k - is the lower limit is the one you want?

Wow - thanks for offering the entry-plus option. I will use it. Fun!

We really did like the Entry-Plus idea... my problem with free competitions in the past (I write myself) is that once I'd sent them off I thought... do those guys actually read this? If so, what did they think?
Hopefully, this option means people like me who worry about that kind of stuff will feel better :)
And yes - 8,000! I will change that now... originally we were going to allow 10,000 but we did some research and found 8,000 was the best kind of word count for a single-sitting short story :)

Thanks for posting this to the forums. I'll definitely be giving this a look and hopefully enter something. This year really is turning out to be the year that I finally get a ton of short stories written! :)

It's unclear to me - you're publishing three more stories, but won't be paying those authors?

Hello Jennifer,
Thank you for the message. The way the competition is run, the prize essentially is publication within the anthology alongside some of the biggest names in Fantasy. Each winner will receive a glass trophy to commemorate their win and of course their profile (as a writer) will be instantly boosted.
First, Second and Third all receive cash prizes.
I suppose if a writer really wanted, they could have the $100 instead of the glass trophies we are having made, but during our research, we found that people were more interested in a trophy they could keep and hold on to, show off, etc as opposed to cash they would spend.
Of course, we'd love to offer each winner hundreds, thousands of £s/$s for their entry. However, this project isn't being done by a big publishing house (sadly). It is being done by a number of genre enthusiasts that want to bring to the forefront of people's attentions some new authors. Profit is not the main aim in this. Any profits made are being put towards making next years competition bigger and even better.
Hope that explains some things :)

Oh! This is exciting! I will be submitting soon. And I'll be going for the option. Will we get a full critique back or just general impressions? I don't mind either, but of course, would like the former. Any feedback is good though.
