The series was about a alien robotic probe that was damaged by a super nova or something on its was back to it's homeworld. It then cannot make the trip home because it does not have enough energy. It scans Earth's solar system and decides to seek help from the earthlings. Some of the earthlings are friendly and try to assist it and learn from it. Other earthlings don't like the alien probe and attack and destroy it. The first group decide to track down the aliens who created the probe.

Your description sounds similar to the plot of the first novel of what would become the Galactic Center Series by Gregory Benford. The first novel, published in the late 1970's was called "In the Ocean of Night". The story line deviates a bit from your description. Humans discover a derelict alien craft on Icarus. On investigation they activate a beacon that calls a roaming robotic craft referred to as the Snark. It has been sent to seek out life by a machine civilization residing in the galactic core. One group of humans communicates with the Snark but others try to destroy it. Hope that helps.
