Hi All,
I've read Robin Hobb's Farseer triolgy series and really liked them. I've been looking at the liveship books of hers and have been unsure of buying them. I don't really like books which focus on sailing. Would anyone recommend these books anyways? Are they as deep as the farseer triolgy, or is their more fluff to them? Thanks for any replies.

I just started Ship of Magic today. If I like it I'll probably be up all night, if not could be a while. I really liked the first farseer book but by the end of the trilogy I was disappointed. I felt it started with so much promise, but for me it never realized its potential. I liked them enough to try the Liveship series, though I am cautiosly optimistic.

I loved the Liveship Trilogy!
Not going to say much more than that.. Well, I loved it! One of my favorite series. That series put her on my "Must buy" list, which usually means I'll buy it in Hardcover. :)

I'll second that.
Thinking back, I can't really remember too much of a focus on sailing, so I wouldn't worry about that. That's where the depth you asked about comes into it I guess, as there's plenty more to focus on other than sailing.
Also, if you're planning on reading The Tawny Man series in the future, reading The Liveship Traders will be well worth your time, as there are a lot of references to it in that series.

Just to be (un)helpful, I've found that there are people who love both series, those who love only the farseer series and liveship-only fans. I guess you won't know until you've tried.
Sailing-wise, I think the ships (their characters) themselves are more important that the sailing, and you'll probably find that the story carries you away during the sailing bits anyway. Personal opinion - I really enjoyed both of them, and I wouldn't be able to say which was better than the other.

Although I enjoyed this series overall, I think it could have used some extensive editing. Hobb's writing was up to her usual excellence (i.e., well-rounded interesting characters, vivid locales, and mysteries hinted at galore. The problem I had was that the books seemed awfully slow. There would be entire chapters where nothing really seemed to happen. Hobb was building up tension and developing characters, but I think she tended to ramble on a bit doing this. It needed to be somewhat tighter...the whole series should have taken fewer pages, I think.
Just FYI, I enjoyed Farseer much more than Liveship Traders.

I much preferred the Liveship Trilogy to the Farseer Trilogy.
The trials and tribulations of Fitz-Chivalry in the Farseer Trilogy became too much to bear. How can one man have to put up with so much abuse.
In the Liveship Trilogy, Hobb got me to hate one of her characters and then gradually get me to respect her.Great writing!

I love the Farseer Trilogy. Thought it was great, though I was very sad for Fitz. Poor guy....

Thanks for the replies. I bought the first book today at lunch. So far so good. Great advice about the tawny man series.
