I'm trying to find a SciFi short story I read as a kid. It involved someone who has the ability to change people biologically and control their mind. I can't remember the story so I might be making stuff up, but I remember him being a young man who became like a cult leader due to his abilities. In some cases he changed someones gender or race. Sorry about the lack of details.

I can't offhand think of the story you are remembering, but a series of excellent novels by Octavia Butler has similar elements: Patternist series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patternist_series).

The story I am thinking of is Stranger in a Strange Land by R. A. Heinlein, although some of your details do not match, like the gender change. However, Michael - Human born on Mars and returned to Earth - does have the power to make clothes and even people disappear; and he also has a cult following because of his 'new' religion that he founds. Hope this helps--John.

Some other similar stories (like the above also novels) are the classic A.E. van Vogt Slan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slan), and Jacqueline Lichtenberg's Sime-Gen universe series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sime_-_Gen_Universe).

Thank you guys. Unfortunately I don't think any of those is the one I'm looking for, but since I enjoy that type of novels I'll make sure to read them.
