I think this was a short story: A woman is in an old church or something similar. She's in trouble and is being held captive (if I remember right). She finds a trapdoor or secret passage that eventually leads down to some sort of underworld. She's unable to see until she takes off her crucifix. I forget what she sees - the story may have made some reference to neon shapes. I'd love to reread it, the atmosphere of the story was really interesting. That's my main problem - I remember how stories feel pretty well, but the authors and titles badly. I want to say the author was someone like Harlan Ellison or R. A. Lafferty. Thanks!
